WFAI U-16 Gaynor Cup tournament.
Thursday June 26, 2014
Fifteen leagues from across the country will congregate later in the week for this year's annual WFAI Umbro women's U-16 Gaynor Cup, being held at the University of Limerick.
Some of the county's finest soccer talent is expected to storm UL's main pitches for three days of action from Friday 27th June to Sunday 29th June.
Reigning champions Dublin Metropolitan will be out to retain the title and to soften the blow of their U-14 team's defeat earlier this month.
This is the second year that the newly commissioned trophy will be played for in memory of the late Jeremy Dee who acted as competitions officer for the tournament.
Strong sides like Cork, who narrowly missed out on the title last year by penalty shoot out, and an impressive Clare side who kept the scoreboard to 0-0 in their final group game against the champions, will make for some classy football to be blitzed across the field.
Limerick County and District and Kilkenny and District will also be strong contenders after ambitious efforts in last year's competition. Kilkenny progressed to the cup semis having only conceded one goal while Limerick went undefeated to top their group.
This tournament acts as a stage for international team coaches to assess potential new players for the u-17 Republic of Ireland squad.
We would like to wish all teams the best of luck and look forward to the sporting week ahead at Ireland's leading sports campus.
