European Powerchair Football Associations Nation's Cup 2014

Tuesday July 22, 2014

UL was delighted to host the European Powerchair Nations Cup which took place from 17th-20th July.

Six countries including Ireland, England, France, Belgium, Denmark and Switzerland battled it out to be crowned European Nations Cup champions and for the chance of qualifying for the 2015 World Cup in Brazil.

The opening ceremony took place in the UL Arena with special guests "The Rubber Bandits" making a brief appearance ensuring things got off to an energetic, if not entertaining, start.

This was followed by the much anticipated first game, Ireland V Switzerland, which saw Ireland claim their first victory with a 2-0 win. However, the scoreline did not reflect Ireland's dominant performance with Switzerland's goalkeeper being their main asset and preventing numerous chances from being counted.

UL was proud to be the stage for what has become the fastest growing disability sport in the world.

Powerchair football is also the first competitive team sport designed and developed specifically for power wheelchair users.

Played on a basketball sized court, teams are comprised of four players which can be a mix of males and females.

Ireland played some excellent football to come in fourth in what was a very tough competition.

France were crowned European Nations Cup champions and look like they'll be top contenders to win the World Cup.

Well done to all teams who took part and to those who came out to show their support for the athletes.
